Things You'll Need
- Unstamped mesh rug canvas
- Fabric paint
- Paint brushes
- Newspaper
- Scissors
- Paper plates

Press out the wrinkles and fold lines from the mesh rug canvas. Allow to cool. Cut the rug canvas to your desired size keeping in mind the amount of yarn you will be using to create the actual rug.

Spread newspapers out over a flat surface such as a table or floor.

Squirt moderate amounts of fabric paint - about 2 tablespoons of each color - onto paper plates. Use a separate paper plate for each color.

Dip your paintbrush into the desired color and dab off the excess. Begin painting the mesh canvas with slow, careful strokes. Allow each color to dry before moving on to different colors.

Allow the entire painted mesh canvas to dry for at least 24 hours before beginning your latch hook process.

Tips & Warnings
This project is perfect for small children. Allow them to paint their mesh canvases as their imagination flows.
If painting a design based on a photo or drawing, have the image nearby when you begin painting.
If you mess up, don't go out and buy a new mesh canvas. Simply cover over the mistakes with one or two coats of white fabric paint and allow to dry.
Fabric paint adheres permanently to fabric, so be sure to wear a smock or apron to protect your clothing.
