How to Stop Coughing with Acupressure

Oriental medicine works with the body, aiding it to return to its normal internal stability. Acupressure stimulates the body to expel disease-causing pathogens and return to its healthy state. Acupressure sometimes succeeds where expectorants, cough suppressants and antibiotics fail to work.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the big tendon in the center of the crease of the elbow. Right next to this tendon, on the thumb side, apply medium pressure with your finger or thumb for about a minute or so. Repeat this three times a day.

    • 2

Locate the crease in the wrist. Move up the arm 1 1/2 inches from the wrist and slightly toward the thumb side. Apply medium pressure with your finger or thumb for about a minute or so. Repeat this three times a day.

    • 3

Locate the two points off the tips of the shoulder blades, close to the spine. Press with medium pressure there to stimulate the body's natural defensive tendencies.

    • 4

Locate the hollow between the breast bone and the collarbone, near the middle of the chest. Apply medium pressure on both sides. This point helps with coughing, breathing issues, throat soreness and congestion of the chest.

    • 5

Locate the area at the back of the skull. Place your thumbs about two or three inches apart, underneath the base of the skull. Tilt your head backward slowly as you slowly and gradually apply pressure to that point. Hold this for a minute.

    • 6

Apply light pressure at the hollow between your Adam's apple and the base of the throat. This helps with coughing, throat soreness, congestion of the chest and heartburn.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will want to identify the true cause of your cough. Coughs can result from several different imbalances in the body. Is it a cold or flu that wasn't taken care of in the early stages? Is it a result of emotional stress, worry, resentment or anger? Is your body weakened from a long term disease? Recognize that certain foods produce more phlegm or dry the phlegm in the body. Avoid sweets, dairy, alcohol and greasy or spicy foods.
