1
Decide what you would like to do in a halfway house. Your options include management, administration, preparing for food transportation, counseling and facilitating group sessions.
-
2
Determine what credentials, if any, are necessary. For example if you would like to be a drug and alcohol counselor, check with your local chamber of commerce or your state to determine if any certifications are required for that position. Sometimes you must have a degree in psychology or sociology to hold certain positions within a halfway house.

3
Contact halfway houses in your area to check for open positions. You can contact local jails or rehabilitation centers for halfway houses that they hold direct partnerships with.
-
4
You also have the option of volunteering. Volunteering allows you to perform different functions in a halfway house, which can ultimately help you decide which position will work best for you. If you perform your duties well, you can speak to the administrator about being hired as an employee.

Make sure you also write a resume and cover letter. It will help if you have a well written resume geared towards counseling, communication and health-related fields.

Tips & Warnings
Certain positions in halfway houses can be quite challenging. Speaking with someone that already has the position you are interested in will give you a good idea of the position's day-to-day duties. You can also attempt to start a nonprofit organization and receive grant funding for starting your own halfway house.
