Instructions

    • 1

Take your pain medication as prescribed. Your surgeon will prescribe the proper medication for your particular circumstances. Be sure to take 30 minutes before you perform rehabilitation exercises to reduce your chances of experiencing pain.

    • 2

Walk with crutches. Do not bear too much weight on the knee after your surgery. Crutches will help avoid any muscle aches that accompany walking around. However, do try to put weight on the knee that is manageable to help restore muscle strength.

    • 3

Ice the knee to help reduce swelling and muscle pain around the injury. Ice for 15 to 20 minutes at least three times per day. Do not apply the ice directly to the skin, as this can cause tissue damage; use a washcloth or towel between the ice and your skin.

    • 4

Massage the muscles surrounding your knee; this will help reduce soreness and promote healing. Prop your leg up, and use a kneading motion to help soothe and relax the aching muscles. Work from your toes up to the groin area, as you want to propel any fluid that is causing swelling toward the heart.

    • 5

Cut back on strengthening exercises as needed. Performing too many exercises after the surgery can lead to excess muscle pain. Discuss your rehabilitation regimen with your doctor or physical therapist.

Tips & Warnings

  • If excessive pain occurs and dose not alleviate, contact your surgeon or doctor immediately.
