How to Save Seeds From Corn

Corn is a crop associated with farming and the summer growing season. The tall, green stalks are impressive, and the ears of corn the plant produces are delicious. If you would like to grow some corn of your own in your home garden, it can be propagated from seed. But growing corn successfully starts well before planting, and you will first need to store the seeds properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Gather as many different corn seeds as possible--genetic diversity within a variety is important.

    • 2

Select the healthiest and best developed corn cobs while on the stalks. Cover each of them with a tied off paper bag (not plastic).

    • 3

Remove corn ears from the stalks in late fall just before the first frost. Pull off the husks so that the seed can dry out better.

    • 4

Hang the ears in an area that is warm and dry for two to three months.

    • 5

Remove the kernels (seeds) from the husk and place them in sealed glass jar. Select kernels that are very wrinkled, and throw out any smooth or off-color kernels. Your corn seed should be good for up to two years this way.
