Airlie Beach is a small town in Queensland, Australia. If you like to scuba dive, you'll find Airlie Beach an ideal base. It is a popular launching spot for visitors to take boat trips out to the nearby Great Barrier Reef. There are dive shops offering both one-day dive boats to the Great Barrier Reef as well as live aboard vessels where you can spend several days sailing through the Whitsunday Islands.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with internet access to research dive shops
  • Bathing suit
  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Waterproof camera
  • Scuba equipment (if you don't have any, the dive shop can provide gear for you)

    Planning Your Trip

  1. Step 1

Decide if you want to do just a one day scuba trip or a live aboard trip. This will depend on how much of a scuba diver you are and how much time you have at Airlie Beach. If you are an avid scuba diver, then a live aboard will help you to maximize your time in the water.

  2. Step 2

Locate a dive operator. You can find a dive operator through one of the certification organizations. For instance, click on the "locate a PADI dive shop" link at the PADI website and type in Airlie Beach, Australia to find the nearest PADI shop in Airlie Beach.

  3. Step 3

Pack a beach bag. You will want to bring a bathing suit, towel, sunscreen and a waterproof camera to take lots of pictures of the beautiful reef. If you are bringing any scuba equipment, don't forget to pack that as well.

  4. At the Dive Shop

  5. Step 1

Check in at the dive counter and get outfitted with your equipment. When you check in, you will need to present your dive certification card. The dive shop will help you find the right-sized fins, wetsuit, Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) and other equipment.

  6. Step 2

Listen to the dive briefing. Once the boat is underway, the dive master will tell you about the dive sites that you will be visiting, water conditions and how and where you will be exiting the boat. Make sure to listen carefully, even if you dive regularly, things tend to vary slightly between dive operators. If you don't have a dive buddy, this is the time to find one.

  7. Step 3

Enjoy your dive. Once you are in the water, make sure to stay with your dive buddy at all times. There is a lot to see at the Great Barrier Reef such as the giant grouper. Make sure to keep your eyes open and take lots of pictures.
