How to Take Ginger Root When Pregnant

One of the less-than-pleasant side effects of early pregnancy is nausea. The feeling of queasiness and vomiting can occur in the morning--the proverbial "morning sickness"--or at any time of day. A study performed at Thailand's Chiang Mai University showed that women who were given ginger capsules experienced significantly fewer symptoms of nausea than women who were given a placebo. Ginger can be taken in capsule form to regulate nausea during pregnancy.

Instructions

    • 1

Take one 250 mg. ginger capsule four times daily. In the Chiang Mai study, women took 250 mg. of ginger before each meal and once before bedtime. These women reported a lowered rate of nausea.

    • 2

For the same effect using powdered ginger, take 1/2 to 3/4 tsp. of fresh powdered ginger before each meal and once before bedtime. The Chiang Mai study reports that freshness may be a factor in nausea relief, so using fresh ginger is beneficial.

    • 3

To use ginger root to combat nausea, slice a 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch peeled slice from the root. This root may be held in the mouth or eaten. It should be taken in the same way as ginger capsules or powdered ginger, before meals and at bedtime. Ginger root can also be grated and steeped in boiling water to make tea; 1/2 tsp. of grated ginger steeped in 8 oz. of hot water for 5 to 10 minutes makes a tea equivalent to about 250 mg. of ginger.
