Instructions

    • 1

Drain the water heater. Attach a general garden hose to the drain knob (the drain knob should be clearly marked on the water heater), and turn off the water tank (the on and off dial should also be clearly marked on the water heater).

    • 2

Open at least one water outlet in the house. Turn on the hot water in the sink that's nearest to the water heater tank. It generally takes 10 to 25 minutes for the tank to empty, depending on how much sediment buildup there is in the tank.

    • 3

Step on the hose while there is established flow coming out of it; this will cause a rush of water to hit the bottom and walls of the tank and force excess debris to come loose. When the tank is empty, loosen more lime and sediment by turning on the water for a few seconds. Eventually, clear water should come from the hose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leave the side valves open through the whole cleansing process. If you do not, air will begin to compress in the lines and blow out the faucet aerators when you turn on your water fixtures.
