Cannas (Canna x generalis) are a variety of lilies that can grow to be 5 feet tall. They have leaves that can grow to be 12 inches wide. Cannas have underground root structures called rhizomes and are grown in USDA hardiness zones 3 to 10. However, they are not winter hardy in USDA hardiness 3 to 6 and therefore must be removed---or dug up---in the fall for safe, winter storage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garden fork or spade
  • Newspaper or screen
  • Open container or mesh bag
  1. Step 1

Wait a few days after the first killing frost when the leaves turn yellow or brown. Then, cut the foliage back with clippers so that about 4 to 6 inches remains above the ground.

  2. Step 2

Dig straight down for about 5 inches around the perimeter of your plant, a couple of inches away from the stem. Use a garden fork or spade. Canna rhizomes are typically 2 to 3 inches beneath the soil, so digging a bit deeper ensures you won't damage them in the process.

  3. Step 3

Pull down on the handle of your spade or fork in several places to carefully lift the rhizomes out of the soil.

  4. Step 4

Dry the rhizomes away from animals and young children. Individually lay them on newspaper or elevated screens for a few hours. Then, store them in an open container or mesh bag in cool and dry location until they can be replanted after the last frost in spring. Temperatures during storage should be between 40 to 50 degrees F and locations such as a garage or attic may work for you.
