How to Harvest Begonia Seeds
Begonias are popular flowers with their multitude of colors. They are planted in outdoor flowerbeds, used in hanging baskets and serve as houseplants. The seeds of begonias are very tiny and fine, almost like pieces of dust. Once planted, they germinate within two to three weeks. Most people who grow begonias buy established plants or start their flowers from cuttings. However, harvesting begonia seeds and sowing them allows you to take your begonia growing to a new level. Watch your begonia plant and begin the process when the flower stems begin to dry.

Clip the flower pod from the stem.

Place the flower pod in a paper bag to dry for about two weeks.

Remove the dried flower pod from the paper bag and place it on a paper plate.

Open the flower pod and carefully remove leaves, flower stems and other debris from the seed.

Place the seed in an envelope and place the envelope in a dry location until you are ready for planting.

Tips & Warnings
Begonias do not tolerate cold. Start your seeds indoors and do not place begonias in any form outside until after all risk of frost has passed.
Begonias do best in full sun. Do not over-water. Wait for the plant's soil to dry between watering. Remove dead flowers, leaves and stems.
Begonia seeds are sown in finely sifted compost. The tiny seeds should be scattered on top of the soil and pressed into the soil, but not covered. A sheet of glass must be placed over the pots to keep temperatures in the 60s.
Don't worry if your begonias don't begin to flower early in the spring. Begonias are phototropic and don't begin to flower until the length of daylight reaches 12 hours.
