How to Change a 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon Brake Light Switch

The brake light switch on a 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon is behind the brake pedal. The switch is activated when you press on the brake pedal. A plunger in the switch completes an electrical circuit which, in turn, illuminates the brake lights. When this switch fails, your brake lights will not light up. At this point, you'll need to replace the switch.

Things You'll Need:

• Socket wrench
• Socket set
• pliers

1. Remove the cotter pin on the back of the brake pedal that secures the brake pin at the bottom of the pedal.

2. Slide the brake pin out of the brake pedal mounting bracket and pull the brake pedal up off the brake booster.

3. Remove the electrical plug from the back of the brake light switch. Squeeze the top of the release tab on the plug and pull it out of the switch.

4. Remove the retaining nut on the brake light switch and slide the switch forward until the push rod on the switch clears the hole in the mounting bracket and then pull the switch down to remove it.

5. Install the new switch. Installation is the reverse of removal.
