Queen palm trees are hardy, tropical plants with a unique, elegant look. They can survive below freezing temperatures and are moderately drought-tolerant. The branches of queen palms spread wide and require ample space. With the proper care, queen palm trees can reach 25-50 feet in height and propagate many trees throughout their lifetime. Take the time to properly care for your queen palm tree and ensure it lives a long, healthy life.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Plant in the right location. Queen palm trees need at least eight hours of sun a day and should be planted in slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Plant each tree 20 feet apart to provide enough space for maximum growth.

  2. Step 2

Water the palm two or three times per week. The summer months usually necessitate a deep watering three times a week, while the winter months require only two.

  3. Step 3

Fertilize the palm three or four times a year. Queen palms are susceptible to stunted or blackened growth from a deficiency of manganese. Use granular food or palm tree spikes to keep your plant healthy.

  4. Step 4

Spread mulch around the base of the tree. Queen palms benefit from a four- to six-inch layer of mulch applied around the base of the tree extending to the edge of the canopy. This keeps the soil moist and prevents an onslaught of weeds.

  5. Step 5

Prune with care. Remove brown fronds in the fall and be careful not to tear the bark. As the tree grows, you will need to climb a ladder in order to reach the base of the stems.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test your soil regularly to ensure a low pH and prevent mineral deficiencies in your palms.
  • Puncture wounds in palm trees never heal. Do not nail signs or lights to the trunks of palms.
