Icons are used in a variety of online applications, including instant messaging systems and message boards. While there are plenty of sites with free icons available for download, it is also very simple to make your own custom icon. Custom icons can include any small image you would like, including stick figures. If you would like to design your own stick figure icon, all you need is a basic graphic design program and Internet access.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Graphics software, such as Photoshop or Paint

    Design the Stick Figure

  1. Step 1

Open a graphic design program, such as Photoshop or Paint. Type in dimensions for the project in Photoshop or resize the white space in Paint using the handles so that you have a square-shaped canvas. Icons are always square, so if the original image is rectangular, the icon will be distorted.

  2. Step 2

Click on the line tool in Photoshop or Paint. Draw lines in both programs by clicking anywhere on the canvas and holding down the left button while you drag the mouse over the canvas. Let go and the line will form. Use this process to draw the stick body, stick arms and stick legs.

  3. Step 3

Select the ellipse tool from the Photoshop or Paint menu. Operate the tool the same way as the line tool to draw a head for the stick figure.

  4. Step 4

Go to the "File" menu and choose "Save." Browse for the folder on your hard drive where you would like to save the image, type a name for the image in the box provided and click "Save."

  5. Convert the Stick Figure to an Icon

  6. Step 1

Go to ConvertIcon or ProDraw. Both of these websites offer simple icon generators.

  7. Step 2

Upload the stick figure image into the icon generator. Click "Get Started" on ConvertIcon and a browse window will come up. Locate the file you created on your hard drive, click on it and click "Open."

Click "Browse" on ProDraw to locate the file and then click "Upload it!"

  8. Step 3

Press "Export" on ConvertIcon and you will be taken to the "Export Options" screen. On ProDraw, you will automatically be taken to the "Select icon size" tab when you upload a file. Select the size of the icon you want to create from the options on the screen.

  9. Step 4

Click "Save as" to open a "Save" window in ConvertIcon. Go to the "Generate & download" tab on ProDraw and click "Download" to open the same "Save" window. Select the folder where you would like the icon to save and type in a name for the file, then click "Save" to save the icon to your computer.
