Learning to play piano takes patience, dedication and plenty of practice. Different people have different learning capabilities. Some do well with teachers, while other may excel working from books at their own pace. One of the easiest ways to learn piano is by working with a DVD. Piano courses on DVD offer the benefit of working in the comfort of your own home at your own pace, while giving you the visual input of an instructor.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a DVD piano course that's right for you. There are many courses available, and trying to determine which courses do what they claim they to do is nearly impossible. The best course is one that presents a comprehensive approach to piano playing that begins with basics and takes you through to advanced music theory and playing techniques in an easy-to-follow, systematic approach. An ideal DVD instruction course is "Learn and Master Piano with Will Barrow." The course includes fourteen DVDs, five CDs, and printed materials to give students a well-rounded DVD piano course.

  2. Step 2

Begin with the first "Learn and Master Piano" DVD. Later, as you progress in your skills, you can move around, but it's best to stay with the first couple of DVDs to get familiar with the program. Each of the DVDs presents a skill level-appropriate lesson, then a workshop that teaches you songs based upon your current lesson level. The workshop uses and animated keyboard approach to teach you how to play songs using the skills you've learned. The workshop effectively reinforces the lessons at each level, preparing you for the more advanced piano techniques you'll learn as you progress.

  3. Step 3

Play along with the CDs that come with the course. There is no better way to increase your playing skills than by actually playing. The five CDs contain full musical presentations of the songs you've learned, minus piano parts, which you will provide. It's like having a band back you up. These CDs are excellent for helping you perfect your musical timing skills and help you develop and incorporate your own playing style.

  4. Step 4

Refer to the printed materials that come with your DVD piano course. All of the information presented to you on DVD is included in printed manuals, allowing you to take your material and learn it anywhere.
