You can paint ceramic tiles to turn them into stepping stones for a significant home improvement. This is a project suitable for building paths to your garden, yard, patio or porch. Ceramic tile stepping stones are functional for reducing the amount of dirt, grass clippings or other grime that visitors can track into your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Outdoor ceramic tile paint
  • Ceramic sealant
  • Outdoor paint gloss
  • Cloth rags
  • Liquid dishwashing soap
  • Paint stick
  • Standard paintbrush
  • Paintbrush cleaner
  • Soft-bristle paintbrush
  1. Step 1

Remove all dust and other debris from the tile with a clean rag. Clean the tile with a mild solvent to remove any non-water-soluble residue. Clean the tile with liquid dishwashing soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Allow the ceramic tile to dry.

  2. Step 2

Open and stir the sealant with a paint stick. Apply the ceramic sealant according to the product instructions, using a paintbrush. Cover the entire tile surface. Apply at least two coats to protect the ceramic from the elements. Clean the paintbrush and paint stick with paintbrush cleaner. Air-dry both items. Allow 24 hours to set and dry the sealant.

  3. Step 3

Open and stir the paint using a paint stick. Paint the tile your desired color. Apply a base coat and allow it to dry. Paint on a second coat to ensure full coverage and color. Apply a third coat if there are any patchy, blotchy or otherwise imperfect spots. Allow to dry 24 hours to assure the paint is stiff and completely dry. Clean the paintbrush and paint stick with paintbrush cleaner. Air-dry both items.

  4. Step 4

Paint on the gloss using a soft brush. Use slow, even strokes to cover the surface of the tile with a thin and smooth coat. Allow one to three hours for drying. Apply a second coat to assure full coverage and protection. Your tiles are ready for outdoor installation after the gloss fully dries.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use multiple colors of paint to create patterns and images on your tiles. Be creative and personalize your stepping stones.
  • Allow the final gloss to dry overnight before installing tiles outdoors.
  • Using a paint that is not rated for outdoor use or ceramic surfaces will cause the paint to chip, bubble or wash away. These types of paints will not stand up to the elements and walkway use.
