Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- Spirit level
- Sand or mulch
- Shovel
- Cinder blocks
- Stock lumber
- Large hammer
-
Step 1
Find a sloped area in your campground that has a flat space near the low end.
-
Step 2
Clear away any brush and use sand or mulch to level the flat portion to make it large enough for public addresses, plays and bonfires (at least 20 feet in diameter).
-
Step 3
Decide the maximum number of people you need to accommodate. Multiply that number by 22 inches to decide how many feet of seating you will need. This will accommodate for the average person, who needs a seat about 22 inches wide to be comfortable, based on the expansion in hip measurements between 1941 and 2004, the two years when comprehensive size surveys were performed.
-
Step 4
Determine how you want your seats positioned. Three amphitheater-style sections with wide, gently-sloped aisles will allow everyone, including those using assisting devices such as walkers and wheelchairs, to reach all rows. Amphitheater-style sections are usually wedge-shaped, with the narrowest row closest to the stage or fire ring. Make rows at least 40 inches wide.
-
Step 5
Cut stock lumber to the length needed. Slide lumber through the holes in your cinder blocks. Measure seating one more time to ensure that you have 22 inches times the number of expected campers, not including the width of the cinder block supports.
