Look for worms around the anus area. If a kid is complaining of itching, use a flashlight to search for pinworms. Call the doctor regarding any worms seen or the possibility of worms. Be sure to let the office know of any discomfort, redness or if itching is present and the length of time the symptoms have occurred.

Take prescribed pinworm medication as directed by the doctor. It is a good idea to repeat the pinworm medication 2 weeks after the first round is completed. This may help prevent another pinworm infection from occurring. Take the full amount of medication until it is completely gone.

Treat other kids in the household for pinworms if they show symptoms. If the infected kid sleeps with a brother, sister or even a parent, treat that household member for pinworms. Tell other parents about possible pinworm infection. Pinworms can be contagious. Parents of other kids may want to contact the doctor for a possible prescription.

Trim and cut the kid's fingernails to prevent further spread of pinworms. Eggs can collect underneath the nails. Encourage the kid to not suck on his thumb and to keep his hands away from his eyes and mouth. Instruct the kid to wash his hands before every meal and after using the bathroom. Make sure warm water and soap is used for each washing.

Shower three mornings in a row while taking the prescribed medication. Showering will help get rid of worms and eggs. Clean the anus area thoroughly and pat dry before dressing. Wash all cloths and towels in hot water immediately in case eggs are present. Put on clean undergarments after showering.

Vacuum the kid's room daily to help prevent eggs from spreading and hatching. Wipe down all furniture, wash the bed linens and mop if the kid's bedroom contains hardwood floors. Be sure to remove mop water after each use and throw away vacuum bags after each cleanup.
