PVC shrink hoods and seals give a bottle of homemade wine class and a very professional look. PVC shrink hoods are available anywhere brewing supplies are sold or can be found online at a number of retail outlets. They come in a variety of colors and sizes, so it is easy to find just the right shrink seal to suit your taste. Fitting the PVC shrink hoods on the bottles is simple and easy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Filled, capped wine bottles
  • PVC shrink hoods
  • Hot air hair dryer
  1. Step 1

Set up your filled and capped wine bottles on a table or counter top.

  2. Step 2

Place a PVC shrink hood over the top of every bottle.

  3. Step 3

Plug the hair dryer into a nearby electrical outlet and turn the dryer on to the hottest setting.

  4. Step 4

Place one finger of your free hand on top of the shrink hood on one of the bottles. Hold the hair dryer approximately 3 inches away from the bottle and direct the air toward the shrink wrap.

  5. Step 5

Turn the bottle slowly to shrink the wrap evenly around the bottle.

  6. Step 6

Remove your finger from the top of the hood and direct the hot air downward to finish sealing the bottle with the PVC shrink.

Tips & Warnings

  • PVC shrink hoods are available for both large and small wine bottles.
  • For added style, add a label that matches the shrink seals you purchase. Most brew shops carry these also.
  • PVC shrink hoods are also known as seals or capsules. They can also be used over screw-on wine caps.
  • If you plan to make a large amount of bottled wine, you might want to invest in a special electric thermocapsuler. As of 2009, these machines run approximate $200.
