Disconnect the power source. Unplug your Dremel, if it is electric. Remove the battery, if it is battery operated. Press the buttons on either side of the battery and pull out the battery while the buttons are depressed.
-
2
Pick the collet you want to use. Choose from one of four collet sizes that fit standard Dremel rotary tools. Make sure it is the size collet that fits the size of the attachment you wish to use.

3
Take off the collet nut. Press the shaft lock button, located right below the neck of the Dremel tool. Unscrew the collet nut, which is the large nut around the collet. Loosen it by turning it in a counterclockwise direction while the shaft lock button is pressed. Use the collet wrench that comes with many Dremel or another small wrench to loosen the collet nut if it is tough to budge. Remove the collet nut altogether so the existing collet is fully exposed.

4
Remove the existing collet. Pull out the collet already in place and place it where it will not get lost. Press the shaft lock button if the collet refuses to budge.

5
Insert the replacement collet. Place the new collet into the opening at the neck of the tool. Make sure to insert it with the unslotted end facing downward to be placed in the bottom of the shaft.

6
Replace the collet nut. Screw the collet neck into place atop the new collet. Tighten it by screwing it in a clockwise direction.
