Things You'll Need:
- Putty or utility knife
- Vacuum
- Power screwdriver
- Screwdriver bit
- Claw hammer
- Wooden block
- All-purpose hammer
-
Step 1
Unlock the window. Use your thumbs to push the safety security tab into the center of the window on specific window frames. Find these tabs on each corner of the window. Lift the window open. Often a window isn't actually stuck but locked.
-
Step 2
Check for a paint sealed window. Place a putty or utility knife at the top-corner of the window and the window-frame with the blade against the seam. Tap the knife gently with the palm of your hand to slip the blade into the seam.
Pull the knife through the seam along the width of the window horizontally, to break the paint seal. Repeat with the bottom seam pulling the knife horizontally.
Pull the knife through the side seams of the window-frame vertically. Repeat on both sides.
Unlock the window. Lift the window to open. Vacuum debris and dust from breaking the dried-paint seals to clean the area. -
Step 3
Examine the window for screws blocking the opening of the window. Attach a screw bit that matches the screw in the window frame, as closely as possible. Set the power screwdriver to unscrew according to its instructions or to spin counterclockwise. Press the bit firmly into the slots in the screw-head. Squeeze the power screwdriver trigger gently and slowly, until the screw starts coming loose. Hold the trigger at this speed until the screw comes out. Open and close the window. Reposition and replace the screw to avoid blocking the window.
-
Step 4
Examine the window for nails blocking the opening of the window. Slide the head of the nail into the slot on the tail of the claw hammer. Pull from the bottom of the handle and tilt the hammer towards the hammerhead. Rock the hammer in this direction multiple times until the nail comes out.
-
Step 5
Inspect the window channels. These are the slots the window slides in to open and close. Make sure they are free from debris. Wipe away any heavy dust, dirt, or other debris with a damp cloth. Apply an all-purpose oil or lubricant to the channels, following the product instructions.
-
Step 6
Push the window-frame from different directions. Try opening the house window slightly and jiggle the frame back and forth. Close the window. Open again, while jiggling on the frame. Close the window again.
-
Step 7
Place a small wooden block at the corner of the window on the frame holding the glass. Tap on the block lightly but firmly with the hammer. Move it about half a foot to foot along the edge. Tap again. Do this all around the window frame to loosen the stuck window for opening.
