How to Replace Neptune Dryer Wheel
The tumbler on a Maytag Neptune rides on dryer wheels attached to the rear panel. When the wheels become worn, it will sound like you have shoes or something heavy in your dryer when it is operating. Once you know how to replace a Neptune dryer wheel, you can fix the problem. Dryer wheel kits are available at appliance stores. The kits will include the necessary hardware needed to replace the it. Unplug the power cord of the Maytag Neptune from the dryer's wall outlet.

Open up the dryer door and remove the screws that secure the front panel to the shroud with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The screws are on the inside lip of the dryer door opening. Close the dryer door after removing the screws. Grab the front panel on each side and lift it up to unhook the front from the tabs on the side panels. Place the front panel out of your way.

Find the door switch, sensor bar and lamp-holder wiring harnesses. Lift up the locking tabs on each one and disconnect them by pulling them apart. Remove the four screws that secure the shroud and front tumbler assembly to the cabinet with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the shroud and front tumble away from the dryer cabinet.

Place both of your hands under the side of the tumbler. Use your left hand to grab the idler pulley and pull it to the left. Use your right hand to slip the belt off of the motor pulley. After the belt is off of the motor pulley, slowly release the idler pulley.

Lift the top cover up slightly with one hand while pulling the tumbler out of the dryer with the other hand. Set the tumbler and pulley out of your way. Locate the two dryer wheels on the inside rear panel of the dryer.

Use a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the fiber washer that secures the wheel to the wheel shaft. Slip the wheel off and place the new wheel on the shaft. Secure the wheel with a new fiber washer included in the wheel kit. Repeat for the remaining dryer wheel.

Place the dryer belt around the tumbler and set the tumbler back inside the dryer. Make sure that the back of the tumbler fits into the rear felt seal and on top of the dryer wheels. Route the belt around the motor pulley and idler pulley.

Reattach the shroud and front tumbler assembly to the cabinet using the retaining screws. Reconnect the wiring harnesses for the door switch, lamp holder and sensor bar. Press the wiring harnesses together until they lock into place.

Lift the front panel into place over the side retaining tabs and push the front panel down to lock it into place. Open the dryer door to secure the front panel to the shroud with the retaining screws. Close the door and plug the power cord back into the dryer wall outlet.
