Many websites out there, particularly social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and others, will allow you to upload a picture to use as your own personal icon on their sites. Unfortunately, many of these sites also have strict parameters that your image must fall within to be uploaded for use and many people out there do not know how to create an icon image for use online that will meet various parameters like size, format and dimensions. With a little know-how, though, you too can create your own online icon.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photoshop CS3 or above
  • Digital camera
  1. Step 1

Take a head shot (just your head and shoulders) of yourself using your digital camera. If your cell phone has a decent camera, it can also be used. This may be easier if you can get a friend or family member to take the image.

  2. Step 2

Transfer the picture of yourself to your computer and open with Photoshop. This process will differ from camera to camera. If you are unsure how to do this, refer to your owner's manual.

  3. Step 3

Crop the image so that it is a square using the crop tool. Make sure to keep your face in the center of the image if possible.

  4. Step 4

Click on "Image>>Image Size" from the top menu bar. You can also press "Control + Alt + I" on your keyboard.

  5. Step 5

Change the size to 128 pixels by 128 pixels. Make sure that your resolution is set to 72 dpi for the Web.

  6. Step 6

Save your image as a jpeg by pressing "Control + S" on your keyboard and selecting jpeg from the list of file types. You can title it anything you like. Make sure to save it in a location you can remember.

  7. Step 7

Resize the image again using step 4 but this time make it 64 pixels by 64 pixels. Save your image as before, but do not use the same exact title. You can separate the titles by adding a number at the end.

  8. Step 8

Upload the larger of the two images to sites that will accept it and use the smaller one on other sites for use as your personal icon.

Tips & Warnings
  • Download the .ico format for Photoshop to create favicons. Resize your image 16 pixels by 16 pixels or 32 pixels by 32 pixels, save as an ico file and upload to an FTP account.
