How to Make a Crayon Holder
Kids love to color. In fact, coloring is an integral part of play for children. So is losing their crayons, it seems. This problem can be avoided by making a handy crayon carrier pouch. The pouch will hold a standard set of crayons and can be designed for either a boy or a girl. It's also a simple enough project that older kids can either help decorate or make themselves. It's as simple as stitching a few pieces of fabric together and adding sparkles and fun to make it their own.
Things You'll Need
- 24-inch piece of ribbon
- Fabric 22x5 inches
- Felt 11x3 inches
- Scissors
- Sewing machines
- Pins
- Crayons
- Fabric glue
- Beads
- Rhinestones
- Bracelet charms

1
Select your fabric. You'll want fabric that isn't too thin and that can provide some sort of protection for the crayons. You can use pieces of remnant fabric, if you have any. Otherwise, fabrics that appeal to kids (i.e., fun colors, superhero or Manga patterns) work great.
-
2
Cut two pieces of fabric 11x5 inches from the large piece of fabric.
-
-
3
Measure and cut a piece of felt of 11x3 inches.
-
4
Pin the three pieces of fabric together with the two larger pieces on the outside and the felt piece in the middle. The "right" sides of the fabric should face one another; it'll look as if the fabric is inside-out.
-
5
Fold the ribbon in half and then place it on top of the fabric pieces, about ¾ of the way down. (It should be "hiding" under the felt on one side.) This should be counter-place to where you think it should be. You want to place the two ends so that they are on the "inside" of the borders of the fabric, with a small loop to hang over the end of one of the pieces of fabric.
-
6
Pin the ribbon to the fabric.
-
7
Work "backwards" by sewing a border almost the whole way around the fabric. It'll seem as if you're going to sew the ribbon and the felt piece on the inside of the crayon holder. However, you're going to leaving a space open.
-
8
Take the pins out of the project.
-
9
Turn the pouch right-side-out. The ribbon should now be on the outside of the fabric, as should the felt.
-
10
Sew up the hole, and then sew a border all the way around the fabric so that the sewing is reinforced.
-
11
Create "pockets" for the crayons by sewing seams ¾ inch apart. Think of "retracing" your steps on the fabric, as if your sewing machine were a lawn mower; you'll sew up one side of the fabric starting at the very end. Then you'll sew over ¾ inch and sew down the fabric. The result should be pockets with stitches ¾ inch apart. Do this until you have 11 pockets.
-
12
Insert the crayons into the pouch, and tie the ends of the ribbon together.

Tips & Warnings
Projects like this one are great for kid involvement. Simply bring out some fabric glue, rhinestones, beads, buttons, bracelet charms and other items that she can paste on the outside of the crayon holder to make it uniquely hers.
