How to Make a Window Cling Solution

These are not store-bought window clings, but clings the kids made themselves on a rainy day using materials already in the house. They made their names in different colors, traced shapes from coloring books, used their imaginations and made different designs. Creating your own window clings is fun and limited only by your imagination. There are several ways you can make window cling solution, but the easiest to use is a white glue solution combined with food coloring. This is an ideal activity for children, but not toddlers. • 1

Pour ¼ cup white glue into each paper cup.

    • 2

Place five drops of red food coloring into one cup and well with one small paintbrush. Do this with each of the cups and food coloring until you have four cups of different colored glue.

    • 3

    • 4

Tear off a piece of wax paper and put the wax paper over the picture. Tape the wax paper'sedges down. You should be able to see the simple design picture through the wax paper

    • 5

Using the paint brush and one of the glue solutions, apply a thick layer of glue in the shape of your design.

    • 6

Let dry for 12-24 hours. When the cling is completely dry, carefully peel the cling off of the wax paper and stick to a window.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you are just starting out using cling glue solution, use simple designs. Go for more complex designs later.

  • Thicker is better when you are applying the glue solution. If you paint thinly, the cling will shred as you pull it off the wax paper.

  • Let the cling dry completely. If you pull it off the paper early, it will break.

  • If the cling does not adhere to your window, moisten it with a little water.

  • You can use containers other than paper cups to mix in. Paper cups make cleaning up easy.

  • Extra glue bottles make very nice tools to apply the solution also.

  • A baking sheet makes a nice surface for doing your designs. Then you can move the clings to dry elsewhere.

  • This is really not an activity for small toddlers. There is always the chance they will put the glue in their mouths.
