How to House Train a 3 Year Old Toy Manchester Terrier

The Toy Manchester Terrier is one of the smallest terriers in existence. Originating from the larger Manchester Terrier in the 1800s, the Toy Manchester version was officially recognized as its own breed by the American Kennel Club in 1938. The breed is fairly rare, despite its sweet personality and easygoing nature.

Housebreaking an older Toy Manchester Terrier can be a challenge, but it is very possible due to the breed's willingness and intelligence.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your dog's crate in a quiet, low-traffic area in your home. Your Toy Manchester Terrier needs a safe place to call his own when you are not able to observe him. Pad the crate with a soft bed and place a few of his favorite toys in there to make him comfortable. Place your dog in his crate when you are away from home or unable to watch him closely to prevent accidents in the house.

Place her on a strict feeding schedule. The more regular your dog's feeding schedule is, the easier it will be to observe her and know when she has to urinate or defecate. Most dogs have to go out within an hour or two of eating. Knowing when she's eaten gives you a guide as to when to take her out.

    • 3

Watch your dog carefully for signs that he has to go outside. Older Toy Manchester Terriers will wander through your house, sniffing the floor and circling as they look for a place to potty. Scratching at the ground, nosing the floor and squatting are also indicators that your dog needs to be taken outside.

    • 4

Walk your dog outside to the potty area in your yard. Designating a single area for your dog to potty not only makes your yard easier to clean but gives your dog a recognizable spot she can associate with the act of going potty. Your dog has to go most often after meals and after waking up. So take her out faithfully during these times.

    • 5

Give your dog a command to potty. Toy Manchester Terriers are very intelligent and quickly will match the command you give her with the act of going potty. Use the command every time you want her to go. Stand quietly for a few minutes and allow her plenty of time to go at her own pace to keep her from feeling rushed and uncomfortable.

    • 6

Offer your dog a treat and praise him thoroughly once he goes. Rewarding the dog immediately after he goes potty teaches him that going outside is the right thing to do, and he will repeat the behavior to be praised again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be consistent in your housebreaking routine. An older dog might have picked up bad potty habits that make housebreaking him difficult. Stick firmly to your routine and offer plenty of praise to show him it's OK to go potty outside when asked.

  • Never physically punish your dog for having an accident. Housebreaking can be a long process, and spanking her for going potty inside will only set back her progress.
