Mix the cake mix with the required ingredients. This varies based upon brand, but most mixes require eggs, oil and water. Pour the batter into cupcake tins with paper cupcake liners and bake in the oven according to the directions on the box.

Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool for 20 to 30 minutes. Take a cookie sheet and cover it with tin foil or decorative paper. Arrange the cupcakes, still in their wrappers, on the sheet in the shape of the number "1." Make sure the cupcakes are placed tightly together, making as solid of a shape as possible.

Ice the cupcakes with icing as if they were one single piece of cake. You want the icing to overlap and make a solid surface. Use the M&Ms to spell out your child's name vertically on the cake. Add a candle at the top for him to blow out.

Tips & Warnings
Cupcakes make a great cake for a child's birthday party because the "slice" of cake is proportioned out -- so no complaints about unfair sizing of the slices. Additionally, one cupcake is a good portion size for children that young and is easy to distribute. However, be sure to unwrap the cupcake for the smaller children to prevent choking on the wrapper.
Be wary of potential allergies, even if you use plain M&Ms -- if a child has a nut allergy, she cannot consume chocolate that has been made in a factory that processes nuts. Be sure to get parents' permission before handing out the cupcakes.
