How to Make a Tier for a Cupcake Cake
Cupcakes are a sweet alternative to the traditional tiered cake. They are easier to serve, because they don't require serving tools or someone to cut the cake. And they can be served in a variety of flavors and colors for a fun, versatile look. Cupcakes are best served on a tiered cupcake stand because they can then be easily displayed and moved. It is easy to make your own tiered cupcake stand at home using craft items from a craft store and your own two hands. Customize each cupcake tier with colored paper and ribbons for a look that is just your own.
Things You'll Need
- 1-inch by 12-inch cake board
- 1-inch by 10-inch cake board
- 2 Styrofoam cake dummies, 2 inches by 6 inches
- Ribbon
- Wrapping paper or cardstock
- Pencil
- White glue
- Scissors
- Pushpins

How to Make a Cupcake Stand Tier

Place one Styrofoam cake dummy on a table with the flat side down. Cover the other flat side with glue and place the other cake dummy on top. Allow them to dry completely.

Place one end of the ribbon at the bottom of the Styrofoam dummies and align the edge of the ribbon with the bottom edge of the dummy. Insert a pushpin to hold the ribbon in place, then wrap the ribbon around the dummy in layers, leaving no gaps between. Place another pin at the other end of the ribbon when you have finished wrapping.

Lay the wrapping paper print side down and place the cake board on top. Use the pencil to trace the cake board, then cut out the circle and glue it to the top of the cake board. Do the same with the other cake board.

Line the side of the cake board with glue, and wrap a ribbon around the board. Place the larger cake board on a flat surface, then put the Styrofoam dummies in the center of the board. Finally, place the smaller cake board on top of the Styrofoam dummy, and you have a base and one cupcake tier.

Tips & Warnings
To add another tier, use a 1-inch by 8-inch cake board, and two 2-inch by 5-inch Styrofoam dummies.
Because this stand is not glued in place, it is difficult to move and should be set up in a safe place. Glue the dummies to the cake boards for a more secure stand.
