How to Block a Website With Categories

While the Internet has many positive attributes, it can also be an unsafe place for children to play, as well as a distraction for employees because of the amount of questionable and objectionable material available online. Web-filtering programs can block material the person administering the program deems questionable or unsuitable for a particular group of Internet users. These programs rely on a category block system to block websites that fall into content categories and therefore keep them away from certain eyes.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a website-filtering program, such as K9 Web Protection or SafeFamilies (see Resources). Create an administrator name and password during the installation process, and then restart the computer.

    • 2

Launch the Web-filtering application, and then sign in using the administrator name and password you created in step 1.

    • 3

Select the Web categories that represent the types of content and websites you want blocked. For example, if you want to block Facebook and MySpace, select "Block Social Networks." You can select categories such as MP3 downloads, alcohol, pornography and peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing. Websites that fall into any of the blocked categories will not load on the computer's Web browser.

    • 4

Select specific keywords you want to use to block certain websites. Websites containing the selected keywords are blocked on the computer's Web browser.

    • 5

Click the "Save" or "Save all changes" button, and then close the website-filtering application.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the settings you input into the website-filtering software and tweak them as needed to ensure you and other computer users can still access websites that do not contain objectionable material. For example, setting a block on the keyword "breast" could prevent a user from accessing information about breast cancer.
