How to Identify the USB Printer Ports in Windows 98
Computers sold with the Windows 98 operating system preinstalled were among the first to offer USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports. Although the ports offered slower data transfer than what we consider normal today, those first USB ports functioned in the same way. There are no set USB ports for specific devices and hardware. However, as USB printers began to appear, most PC manufacturers labeled one of the integrated ports as the "printer port."

1
Inspect the front panel of your Windows 98 computer. Some computers at the time offered a front-loaded USB port. The port is about a half inch wide and a quarter of an inch tall. An image of a trident is displayed next to all USB ports.
-
2
Look at the back side of the computer if you could not find any USB ports on the front. Most Windows 98 computers have at least two USB ports side-by-side on the rear of the computer.

3
Insert the USB cable from the printer into one of the available USB ports. It does not matter which USB port you select.
-
4
Insert the printer driver installation disk into the CD drive of the computer. If the installation wizard does not open select "My Computer" and double-click the CD drive icon.
-
5
Accept the license agreement for the driver (you cannot install it if you do not) and follow the remainder of the prompts to complete your USB printer driver installation.
