How to Grow Leyland Cyprus
The Leyland cypress is a hybrid of Monterey cypress and Alaskan cedar. It is usually grown in southern, coastal regions of the United States, such as California, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. Leyland cypress trees can grow three to four feet per year; without pruning, they can grow to heights of 100 feet or more. They are prized for their ability to swiftly provide a living wall. The delicate bark has a skin-like texture and foliage ranges from dark green to gray colors. If you are the proud owner of a Leyland cypress tree, follow a few simple guidelines to help it grow healthy and strong. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Fertilize the Leyland cypress tree in early spring for best results. Fertilizer is available in several formulas, such as time release, water soluble and organic. Leyland cypress responds better to longer release fertilizers; eight to nine month or even 12 to 14 month release formulas are preferred. Water soluble formulas are powders that you mix with water before pouring on the ground around your tree. Organic fertilizer, or materials like compost or aged manure can be worked into the soil around the tree.

2
Prune branches in late spring and again in early fall using sharp hand clippers. Do not use electric hedge trimmers as their erratic motions can damage the branches. Leyland cypresses grow very quickly and their size can get out of control if you do not prune regularly. Trim branches off the top to keep the tree shorter, and trim outward branches to maintain a more compact appearance.

Support a young Leyland cypress tree by loosely tying the tree to stakes driven into the ground. High winds and heavy rains can cause young trees to topple. When tying, keep in mind that the tree will grow quickly. Check ties every three months and loosen, as needed, to prevent the tie from growing into the tree.
