How to Make Your Own Electricity Using Magnets

Magnetism and electricity are two closely related phenomena, and in fact each can be used to cause the other. There is a growing movement of people building personal magnetic generators to cut down on energy costs. If you have the technical know-how to read engineering schematics and blueprints, you too can build your own generator.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a schematic for the generator. Schematics can be found online, but you'll probably want to pay for one to be sure it works.

    • 2

Go to the local hardware store. Most plans don't require anything you couldn't find there.

    • 3

Build your generator. Once you have your parts and your plans, just follow the schematics to build the engine.

    • 4

Use the basic properties behind electricity and magnetism to try and come up with your own design if you wish. Most generators essentially have three parts: a bundle of metal wires (normally copper), magnets, and a turbine. The wire is spun by the turbine inside the magnetic field, which creates electricity.

Tips & Warnings

  • People without engineering experience should probably seek a professional's help (or at least a talented friend's) if they want to try building their own magnetic generator.
