How to Make Placemats With Yarn

Decorating your house for the holidays can be expensive. From tree ornaments to lighting to festive holiday dishes, you can spend a lot of money before you even start shopping for gifts.

There are many ways to create home decorations that won't break the bank. For example, you can change the look of your dining room with handmade placemats. If you know basic knitting such as casting on and the knit stitch, you can make placemats with scrap yarn.

  • Size 10 U.S. knitting needles

Instructions

    • 1

      Using yarn of holiday color, cast on 100 stitches.

    • 2

      Knit across.

    • 3

      Continue knitting every row for a total of 80 rows.

    • 4

      Bind off using knit stitch.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can alternate stitches and purl every other row to create the stockinette stitch.

  • For a ribbed look, alternate between knitting one stitch and purling one stitch all the way across.

  • Yarn placemats can also be crocheted or woven with yarn scraps.
