1. Buy the septic enzyme solution of your choice. All the septic solutions provide minimally four enzymes that break down waste; they include cellulase, lipase, protease and amylase.

2. Read the directions completely on the product you buy. Open the product.

3. Pour the suggested amount into only one toilet bowl in your home. It is usually a powder or liquid and up to 28 ounces. Flush the solution. The product will begin to work within two hours.

4. Repeat this once a month, every month to maintain waste in your septic tank.

Tips & Warnings

• If the smell persists after a week, call your local waste management company and request that they pump your septic tank. You should pump your septic tank every 5 to 20 years. By adding enzymes to your septic tank, you can greatly lengthen the time between septic tank pumping.
