How to Move Songs From an iPod to iTunes

Although Apple bundles its iTunes software with its iPod music manager, the iTunes software lacks some features that other free audio software includes. In order to move songs from an iPod to iTunes, you will need to download and install a free iTunes-alternative, such as Floola, Yamipod or Winamp. Please see the Resources section for a link to ten alternatives to iTunes. For this article, we'll use the Winamp software running in Windows Vista.

Things You'll Need

    • 4

In the left-hand column, find the "Portables" header. Expand it by clicking once on it.

    • 5

Click on your iPod. Winamp lists the artists on your iPod in alphabetical order. Select the artist you want to transfer to iTunes.

    • 6

Right-click on the selected item, then click on "Copy to local media."

    • 7

Close Winamp once all of your files have transferred. Click on "Start again." Type in "itunes," and click on it.

    • 8

Click on Start. Type in "music." Click on the Music folder. You should now see the music you transferred to your computer via Winamp. Select the folders you want to transfer to iTunes, and drag-and-drop them into your iTunes window.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also press Alt + L to open the Media Library or right-click in the Winamp screen to open a menu that shows Media Library as an option.

  • Select multiple artists by holding down the Ctrl button while clicking.

  • You can use Ctrl + C as a shortcut to "Copy to local media."

  • You can change the folder that Winamp saves your transferred music by selecting "View" in the Media Library window, then choosing "Media Library Preferences." Click on "Portables," then specify your destination folder and naming convention preferences.

  • You can disconnect and reconnect your iPod in between using different software programs to minimize errors and syncing issues.

  • Using other music programs to sync your iPod can cause problems when using iTunes. You may find it more prudent to select one audio software for managing your iPod rather than switching between iTunes and an alternative program.
