How to Eat Healthy When You Hate Fish

The American Heart Association recommends that the average individual consume fish at least two times a week . While this is an excellent suggestion, this recommended amount of consumption can be somewhat daunting for an individual that strongly dislikes fish. The good news is that fish is not the only item that contains beneficial proteins and omega fatty acids that are useful for optimal health. • 1

Make an effort to eat foods that offer similar health benefits to fish. Two items you will want to seek out are omega fatty acids and protein. Items that you can add to your diet that contain these useful substances include eggs, tofu, spinach, and walnuts. Try to eat these items at least two times a week in order to intake good amounts of healthy fat and protein.

    • 2

Cook with oils or use butter that contains omega fatty acids. Nowadays many cooking oils, olive oils and brands of butter are infused with omega acids. Using these products when you cook is an extremely useful way to consume omega acids while eating items within your typical diet.

    • 3

Add a supplement to your diet. Fish oil, which contains those useful omega fatty acids is available as a supplement that can be consumed on a daily basis. Speak with your health care practitioner before adding this supplement to your diet. Once you are given the go ahead, visit a local vitamin or health food store to check out the different types of fish oil available and begin taking it on a daily basis.

Find creative ways to add fish to your diet. You may dislike fish simply because of the way it was prepared for you in the past, or perhaps it was the type of fish you tried that turned you off. With the large variety of fish available, you may find that you do not actually hate all kinds of fish. Salmon would be an appropriate fish to try because its flavor is not incredibly strong. Instead of grilling it and making it a main entree, try adding a few small pieces to a cream based pasta dish to see if you find it tolerable. Additionally, make sure the salmon that you use is extremely fresh to decrease the chances of a fishy taste or smell. With a little creative cooking, you may find that you do not actually hate all types of fish.
