How to Seal Masonite

Masonite is a sturdy composite board used in a variety of carpentry or art projects. Masonite often needs to be sealed during installation to give surfaces a smooth, even finish.   • Clean brush
  • Lacquer sanding sealer
  • Power sander
  • Low-gloss latex paint

      Apply one coat of lacquer sanding sealer to your Masonite with a clean brush. Allow at least one hour for maximum drying time. Follow the manufacturer directions on your lacquer sanding sealer for any necessary additional coats.

      Sand the exposed surfaces of your Masonite with a power sander. This will remove upright fibers stiffened by the sealer. Sand the Masonite lightly to a smooth finish.

      Apply one more coat of the lacquer sanding sealer to your Masonite. Let the Masonite sit for at least one hour to dry.

      Apply one coat of low-gloss latex paint to your Masonite with a paintbrush. Let the paint dry for at least one hour, or follow manufacturer directions.

      Apply an additional coat of low-gloss latex to your Masonite. Allow the second coat to dry before performing any additional treatment to your Masonite.
