How to Clean Antique Acrylic Painted Wood

Wood used in acrylic-painted antique furniture is delicate, and using water to clean the piece is a bad idea as water can warp the wood and loosen screws. Because the acrylic paint acts like a finish to the piece, it's best to clean it how you would any finished piece. Using a solvent-based cleaning solution is easier than filling up a bucket with soap and water and trying to wash the whole piece of furniture down. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 3 soft, dry dust cloths
  • Solvent-based cleaning wax

Instructions

    • 1

Use a dust cloth to wipe away any dust that has collected on the furniture. Set the rag aside to wash later.

    • 2

Apply some solvent-based cleaning wax to a second cloth, using just enough to dampen the cloth. Use small, circular motions across the entire piece of furniture, reapplying the cleaning wax as needed.

    • 3

Take the third unused dust cloth and gently wipe away any excess wax, using the same circular motions as before. Collect any wax that has gathered in grainy sections, bumps and nicks, and corners.

Tips & Warnings

  • When dusting, make sure to get around knobs, between cracks and around any carved details the furniture may have.

  • It is important to put a little strength behind the motions of waxing.

  • When waxing, be careful around any of the acrylic paint that is chipping to avoid further damage.
