Underwater floral arrangements create a simplistic yet sophisticated look to any table. This type of arrangement is gaining popularity among new brides for decorating reception tables. It is also a beautiful way to display flowers from your garden throughout the spring and summer. Some good flowers to use include roses, orchids, calla lilies, tulips and hydrangeas.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tall cylinder glass vases
  • Flowers such as orchids, roses, hydrangeas, calla lilies or tulips
  • Small fishing weights
  • Glass stones
  • Small tea candles
  1. Step 1

Choose three glass cylinder vases in varying heights. If desired, set the vases on a small found mirror to make a striking centerpiece.

  2. Step 2

Place a layer of glass stones in the bottom of each vase. Use clear stones or coordinate the color of the stones with the flowers.

  3. Step 3

Use two to three flowers for each vase depending on the size of the flowers and the vase. Do not try to put too many flowers into one vase, or it will look too crowded. Also, it is best to use only one kind of flower per vase instead of two to three different kinds.

  4. Step 4

Cut the flowers to fit down inside of the vase. Attach a small fishing weight to the bottom of the flower stem using clear fishing wire. This will help to hold the flower down into the water so it doesn't float up.

  5. Step 5

Place the flower(s) into the vase. Make sure the fishing weight is hidden down in the stones. Another option is to use a florist frog that sits in the bottom of the vase and holds the flower stem in its mouth, securing the flower in the water.

  6. Step 6

Add water to the vase to within 2 inches of the rim of the vase. Use distilled water only, as tap water can cause bubbles to appear around the flowers when submerged.

  7. Step 7

Place one or two candles on top. The amount of candles used will depend on the size of the candles and the size of the vase. Do not crowd the candles so they can float freely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use real flowers instead of silk because the flowers are magnified when submerged in water. Silk flowers can bleed when submerged and show any imperfections.
