How to Hook Wood & Tile Laminate Together

Laminate floors come in many styles and patterns but one of the most popular is the hardwood style laminate floor. This laminate is often finished so well that it is very difficult to determine that it is laminate and not a full hardwood. One of the ways to tell is the height of the laminate. Hardwood tends to be quite thick so when it is adjacent to other laminate or vinyl floors there is a big difference in floor height. With laminate, the floor height is not as great. The best transitions between vinyl and laminate is to select a transition made by the laminate manufacturer, since this will maintain the appearance of a hardwood floor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the track system along the edge of the laminate hardwood floor. Use an expansion joint spacer between the edge of the laminate and the side of the track.

    • 2

Use the side of the track as a guide to cut the excess vinyl flooring. Once cut, remove the excess from under the track.

    • 3

Reposition the track and mount it to the subfloor using screws and a power screwdriver. The track system should come with appropriate screws for installation.

    • 4

Remove the expansion joint spacers on the laminate flooring side of the track.

    • 5

Cut your laminate transition reducer (made for a transition to vinyl) to the appropriate length using your table saw. Position the transition and snap it into the track.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connecting the two floors through a reducer is a good way to create a smooth transition from one surface to the other.
