How to Get a Job As a Postal Worker
The United States Postal Service employs over 600,000 people in various capacities. According to the State University of New York, the majority of these workers are either postal clerks, whose responsibility it is to handle bulk mail, or the letter carries who deliver mail to residences and places of business. Due to good pay, benefits and room for advancement, a job for the US Postal Service is a much-coveted position. By following the correct application and education requirements, you can get such a position.

Achieve citizen status for the United States of America. If you were not born in the United States, you must attain citizenship status before applying for a position.

Wait until you are eighteen years old to apply. Even if you have already graduated high school, you must be eighteen before you can apply for a position with the USPS.

Complete a high-school education at an accredited school. You may also have completed a high school equivalency diploma (GED).

Obtain a driver's license. If you are applying for a position as a mail carrier, the post office will require that you have a valid driver's license for the state in which you want to work.

Go to your local post office where you will find the application form for the position you are seeking. If you are seeking a job as a clerk or carrier, you will also be given the schedule for the testing dates for that location. All applicants must fill out the application at the local post office and then return to the post office the day that the test is administered.

Successfully pass the given test. You will be tested in the following areas: Checking names and numbers quickly and accurately and memorization of distribution procedures. Usually, the top three scoring candidates at each testing site will be offered a position at the post office. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a candidate may have to wait up to two years after successfully passing the test before being offered a position in the USPS.

Pass a drug test. Each candidate must pass a drug test in order to secure a position as a postal worker

Complete the on-the-job training. After you begin working for the postal service, you will be given on-the-job training in the procedures of the job and the local office. The training time varies depending on the position you are filling and the office in which you will be working.
