How to Get Rid of Mold Under Indoor-Outdoor Carpet

Mold can be a dangerous allergen and can wreck havoc on your respiratory system, especially if you have asthma or any other kind of breathing problem. Although mold can grow in just about any location of your home, it most often appears under your carpeting. This is due to tracking water into your home from the outside or just from simple spills that may occur over the carpet. To keep your asthma under control, it is important to kill off any mold that may be growing under your carpet.

• Kill mold spray
• Sponge
• Utility knife
• Rag
• Water

Instructions

1. Determine if the carpet is worth saving. If your home underwent flooding and your indoor-outdoor stayed underwater, there is a good chance the entire carpeting has severe mold growth. If this is the case, you are better off simply replacing the carpet.

2. Pull up the carpet you want to remove the mold from. If you have space carpet that is not installed on the ground, this is a simple process; however, if your indoor-outdoor carpet is installed, you need to cut around the walls with a utility knife and pull the carpet up.

3. Spray a mold killer onto the underside of the carpet, and allow it to sit for several minutes. You can purchase these products in the cleaning department of most large retail stores. The mold killing spray removes the mold spores, keeping the mold from spreading after you have removed it.

4. Scrub off the mold with a cleaning sponge and water.

5. Dry off the underside of the carpet with a rag, and allow it to air dry completely before laying the carpet back down. If the indoor-outdoor carpeting is wet, and you lay down the carpet, it will form mold again.
