How to Attach Electrical Connectors

Depending on the project you are working on, you'll find electrical connectors in different shapes and sizes to fit each particular need. The key is selecting the right size and rated connector to be able to handle the electrical current that will be flowing though it. Additionally, you need to know how to attach electrical connectors properly for it to work correctly and safely. One of the best ways to attach electrical connectors is soldering them to the wiring as this will provide a solid and lasting connection. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover with the screwdriver by removing the cover screws and prying the cover off the electrical connector. Take care to not damage or crack the plastic covering.

    • 2

Strip about 1 inch of insulation off the end of the wire. Run the wire strippers up the wire until the insulation gives way. Twist the stranded wire in a clockwise direction to securely wrap them together.

    • 3

Heat the soldering gun up for three to five minutes. Apply a small amount of flux (size of a pencil lead) to the wire and smear it around on it. Heat the wire a bit and apply solder to the wire just enough so the solder flows down into the stranded wire and bonds them together.

    • 4

Insert the end of the soldered wire into the end of the connector. Holding this carefully and still, apply solder to the connector end and the wire to bond them together. Be care to not apply to much solder that the cover will not be able to be reassembled.

    • 5

Replace the cover over the connector and tighten the screws snug fit with the screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a clean connection, apply only as much solder is needed for a secure connection.

  • For the best possible soldered connection, remove any loose wiring or chemicals that would prevent the solder from adhering to the wire and connector.

  • Never leave the soldering gun unattended and allow 15-20 minutes for the gun to full cool down before storing.

  • Avoid contact of the tip of the soldering gun to prevent burns.

  • Always wear safety glasses to prevent contact of the solder with the eyes.

  • Due to the content of lead in the solder, work in a well-vented area.
