Microsoft Windows Me Millennium Edition is an operating system for home users. Windows Me includes a control panel that you can use to manage different parts of the systems such as video, audio, user accounts and printer connections. At times the items in Control Panel may no longer appear. When this occurs, you can restore the control panel files in Win Me by editing the system Registry.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click "Start" and select "Run" to open a Run window.

  2. Step 2

Type "REGEDIT" in the "Open" text box in the Run window, then click the "OK" button. This opens the Registry Editor.

  3. Step 3

Click the plus (+) sign next to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" in the left-side navigation pane of the Registry Editor. This expands the tree. Click to expand "Control Panel," then click to expand "don't load."

  4. Step 4

Right-click the "don't load" subkey in the right-side content pane of the Registry Editor, and then click the "Delete" button in the context menu. This restores all missing Control Panel files and their associated icons.

  5. Step 5

Exit the Registry Editor to complete the process. The missing files will be restored when you next open the Control Panel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Editing the Registry can cause a system to become unstable or to stop operating completely. Edit the Registry only as a last resort or when directed to do so by a qualified computer professional.
