How to Use Keyboard Shortcuts for Firefox Browsers

In the event that your touchpad is not working properly or a mouse is not available, using the keyboard to navigate around in Firefox can solve the issue, at least temporary, it can be a good experience, as well. Some people claim using shortcut keys is faster while browsing Internet with Firefox; this depends on your preference, however. Following are some less known and used keyboard shortcuts for Firefox >>

Things You'll Need:

  • Mozilla Firefox (any version of 3.0.XX and 3.5.X)
  • Mouse/touchpad, optional
  • Keyboard
  1. Step 1

    If you need help on using Firefox, press F1 for help contents.

    To go back to a page, press Alt+ ← (Left arrow). To go forward one page previously visited, press Alt+ → (right arrow). To go back to home page, press Alt+Home. If you want to see your search history, press Ctrl+Shitf+H / Cmd+Shift+H. Press Ctrl+Shift+Del / Cmd+Shift+Del to remove history.

    Press Ctrl+U / Cmd+U, to see the active page source.

  2. Step 2

    To increase the font size on a viewing page, press Ctrl++ / Cmd++. Press Ctrl+- /Cmd+- to decrease the font size on current web page. Pressing Ctrl+= brings back the Firefox default font size.

    To see in full screen, press F11.

  3. Step 3

    Press Ctrl+F / Cmd+F to search text on a current web page. This will open the "Find" function, same as going to Edit > Find on the main menu. Press Ctrl+G / Cmd+G to find the text again on a particular web page.

  4. Step 4

    Press Ctrl+K / Cmd+K to enter search criteria into the Search field. Press Ctrl (or Cmd)+↓ (down arrow) or Ctrl (or Cmd)+↑ (up arrow) to rotate through the available search services.

  5. Step 5

    Entering domain suffix: After entering an Internet address, instead of typing in the suffix ".com", press Ctrl+Enter (for PC), and Cmd+Enter (on Mac). Firefox will add the suffix for you after the Internet address.

    For ".net": (PC & Mac) Shift+Enter

    For ".org": (PC) Ctrl+Shift+Enter, (Mac) Cmd+Shift+Enter.

  6. Step 6

    To open a new Firefox browser window, press Ctrl+N / Cmd+N. To open a new Firefox browser tab, press Ctrl+T / Cmd+T.

    Press Ctrl+Shift+W / Cmd+Shift+W to close a Firefox browser window. To close a tab, press Ctrl+W / Cmd+W.

  7. Step 7

    Press Ctrl+Shift+F7 / Cmd+Shift+F7 to activate Spellcheck (must have spell checking addon). To save current "entry", press Ctrl+S / Cmd+S (must have "Scribe" extension).

Tips & Warnings
  • These shortcut keys are useful when you have difficulties using your touchpad, and a mouse is not available.
