Improve Your Backstroke Balance Using Catch Up Swim Drill

One of the elements of a having faster backstroke is balance. If you can balance on your back while you are swimming then you can pivot from side to side more easily. This article teaches you the catch up drill on your back.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

While kicking a normal backstroke flutter kick, stretch both arms out above your head. Keep one arm stretched out and then pull the other under the water to finish the stroke normally.

  2. Step 2

Bring the arm that finished the stroke out of the water and stretch it out even with the other one, as if you are going to stroke again. This time finish the stroke with the other arm and bring it out of the water and put it even with the other arm stretched above your head.

  3. Step 3

In other words, swim a normal backstroke, and let your hands catch up at the top of the stroke above your head. The challenge is to keep your balance with one or the other arm stretched above your head with each stroke that the opposite arm is taking. Kick and glide a little bit between each stroke if you have trouble balancing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your head in line with your body as you backstroke.
