How Make a Time Capsule Using a Jar

Time capsules are a great way to save memories for a later date as well as pass along cultural information to future generations. Although traditionally time capsules have been created by cities and schools, they are also a great way to pass along family mementos and trinkets as well.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jar with a wide opening
  • Trinkets and mementos
  • Sheet of metal
  • Paint
  • Stepping stone
  1. Step 1

Get a large jar that is big enough to fit each timecapsule item. Make sure that the mouth of the jar is large enough to pass the items through. Although clear jars are most frequently available, you may want to choose a dark colored jar to add to the mystique when it is time to dig up the time capsule.

  2. Step 2

Decide what to add to the time capsule jar. The options are really endless as to what to include, however here are a few suggestions: handwritten notes, newspaper clippings, drawings, photos, lists of favorite items such as music or books and inexpensive jewelry.

  3. Step 3

Decide where to place the time capsule jar. Although time capsules are most frequently buried, they don't have to be. You can also place timecapsules in attics or basements.

  4. Step 4

Mark the timecapsule. If you decide to bury the time capsule, make sure to mark it so that others will be able to find it. Markers can be made out of any durable weather proof material such as painting the words "timecapsule" on sheets of metal. Another option is to use a stepping stone placed over the timecapsule. When marking a time capsule, make sure to put the date it was placed there and the name of the person who placed it.

  5. Step 5

Let other people know about the timecapsule. Whether you decide to bury the timecapsule or place it in an indoor location, be sure to let other people know it's there. Family members, close friends and co-workers will carry on the tradition in case you forget about the timecapsule or move away before it's opened.
