Step 1
Decide where you need to be in New York City for work. This is crucial to your success in relocating to New York City.
-
Step 2
Get a subway and bus route map. New York City encompasses the Five Boroughs of New York, not just Manhattan.
New York City is a big city and the majority of people commute from home to work.
Traveling from the Upper West Side all the way down to Wall Street could actually take you longer by train than it would if you lived in some parts of Brooklyn and Queens. -
Step 3
Figure out how many minutes you are willing to spend commuting to work by mass transit and how many connections you are willing to make. Keep in mind, connecting trains can waste a lot of precious time and many of the trains are not directly across the platform and could take you as much as five minutes to walk to the next platform underground.
-
Step 4
Check out the crime in the area you are looking to move into. Many people wrongly believe that New York is the most dangerous city to live in. While New York City is generally a safe place to live, there are many areas of New York City that have very high crime rates both violent and non violent.
If you plan on keeping a car in New York outside of garage, it is important to also check the area for car theft. Some areas of New York City are notorious for car theft. -
Step 5
Find a good school district in New York City. This is important if you are planning on relocating to New York with children. Lucky for you, most of the schools in New York City are very good.
Keep in mind that New York City schools also bus children from one area to another area so the school that is actually closer to your home may not be the school your child is zoned for. This may be an issue for you especially if the school is in an unsafe neighborhood or your child has to commute by train or bus to get to school.
When looking at schools in New York City, be sure to not only check out the academic ratings but the crime rate as well. Unfortunately, there are some schools in New York City that experience a large amount of violent crime. Thankfully, this is not the norm for New York City Schools. -
Step 6
Consider subletting an apartment for a short amount of time, maybe 3 to 6 months. Subletting will allow you the time you need to make an educated guess about what area of New York City is best for you.
Subletting a furnished apartment will also make things easier on you so that you only need to move once. You can keep your stuff in rented storage until you find the right place to live. -
Step 7
Live within your means. There are many places in New York City to fit every budget and lifestyle. You may need to tack on a few extra minutes to your commute to do it but it will be well worth it.
