Most people think of a vacation as a time to let loose and just enjoy yourself. Enjoying yourself is definitely a great goal, but letting loose may bring you home with some good memories, and also a few additional, unwanted, bulges. With a bit of planning, those bulges need never appear.

    Make sure your are vacationing with a like-minded companion. If you start off with a buddy whose only goal is to lounge by the pool, eating and drinking everything in site, any good intentions you have will be hard to maintain.

  2. Step 2

    Make some wise decisions even before you finalize your destination. Do you want to maintain your present physique or possibly even lose a few pounds? Do you want to continue your effort to avoid disease and ensure a long and healthy life? If you are with your children, do you want to set them a good example? If your answer to these questions is yes, then tailor your vacation accordingly.

  3. Step 3

    In the process of deciding on a vacation destination, investigate what facilities will be available for your use. Choose a destination where you have various options for exercise as well as enjoyment. Most resorts have a choice of water sports, but make sure you have other options close by such as climbing, golf, biking, kayaking, and hiking. Make sure you are ready to take advantage of all these activities by including in your luggage a good pair of walking shoes or boots and outfits suitable for physical activity. If you will be staying at a resort, before you finalize your plans, find out if there are any additional charges for participating in the activities offered.T

    Take a risk. Consider trying an adventure holiday. There are many of these available that allow you to spend days kayaking down wild rivers, or hiking in mountains, forests, and even jungles. Adventure holidays challenge you both physically and mentally, but send you home invigorated and possibly even leaner.

  5. Step 5

    Before you leave home, consider take a course in something like yoga, that you can practice anywhere, even in a small hotel room. Learn a series of some simple stretches and start and end your active day with an exercise routine. Make plans to learn at least one new activity on your holiday. No matter where you are, do some sort of exercise for at least an hour each day. If you have no athletic abilities, walk for an hour each day. If you are near water, and cannot swim, frolic in waist-deep water for an hour each day.

  6. Step 6

    Always start your day with your own personal supply of healthy snacks, such as dried fruits, seeds, and nuts. This will help you resist those calorie-laden restaurant offerings. This is especially important if you must wait in airports or bus depots. At your destination, shop in local markets and try local delicacies, including unfamiliar fruits and vegetables.

  7. Step 7

    You will be sorely tempted to overindulge if you are taking a cruise. Virtually all cruise ships now have gyms and tracks for running or walking. Make plans to use these daily and stick to your plans. For your meals, select dishes with lots of healthy ingredients and make sure your meats are baked, broiled or grilled.

  8. Step 8

    Be wise with your alcohol choices. Drink light beers and wines, and between each alcoholic drink, drink a glass of water.

  9. Step 9

    If possible, always choose walking over riding. You will see more, get to meet more people, and return home renewed, and lighter.
