Freelance writing jobs

For those who have the ability to do research, write, and work on a computer, opportunities abound to earn money working from home. Freelance writing in this way supports the sharing of ideas and information with people around the world. Freelance work is widely available, and the astute writer can find sites online that need articles and even creative writing in many genres and about many topics.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The aspiring freelance writer needs to begin by identifying what genres and topics would fit his or her interests the best. This helps him or her to craft the first few pieces of writing, to be used as introductory clips, as possible jobs are found. Starting by writing about experiences and areas of expertise allows the writer to hone grammatical and other technical skills to impress potential clients.

  2. Step 2

Because freelance writing is becoming so popular, many freelancers conduct online searches for writing newsletters and possible publishers for their work. Newsletters help by giving the writer hints at how various types of publications prefer pieces to be formatted. These show the aspiring writer what direction to take his or her writing for the most success.

  3. Step 3

Some newsletters and many websites offer advertisements with thousands of online freelance work. To actually find work, the writer needs to apply to as many of the ads as he or she feels appropriate to the number of hours he or she can work each week, the topics the writer is comfortable handling, and how his or her particular writing skills fit the job described in the ad. Always apply to more ads than what seems possible, as not all job posters will reply, and there will be rejections even among those who do reply.

  4. Step 4

While applying to those ads, also consider writing articles on third-party sites. Many writers’ groups have their own websites where a new writer can join and post pieces for peer review, earning residual income while learning the craft. The third-party sites generally come up in a list when one does a search for freelance writing websites. While doing the searches, one is always wise to change the wording of the search string to ensure many results and more possibilities.

  5. Step 5

These sites and others like them generally also have a dedicated area where a freelance writer can find topics of expertise and interest to write longer articles about for clients, which can earn even more income. Talented writers on some of the sites also receive orders directly from clients without having to enter the pool of writers or topics first.

  6. Step 6

Generally, articles requiring research or more technical knowledge of a given subject pay better rates on many of the sites. However, good writes often become good by starting with shorter pieces on subjects they know well. The more sites and clients a person writes for, and the more time spent on this venture, the better his or her income will be. Some people take up freelance writing as a means of making extra income, perhaps for a certain goal, while others work their way into a career of writing and helping others learn to write. So, if you ever ask yourself "how do i become a freelance writer"? Start with the above suggestions and slowly work your way to success!
