The first step is to develop friends in the program. You will want to have at least a few close friends within the program both for information sharing and the moral support.

2
Your next step is making friends outside of the program. Making friends outside of the program is also a good idea because it gets you out of the MPA bubble. If you spend all of your time with people in your program, you will increase your stress level through constant exposure. Try joining a club or organization outside of the MPA program or find some people who share similar interests to you on meetup.com.

While at school you may want to shy away from engaging in intense political conversations. At an MPA school everyone has an opinion and there are always a few people who are overly eager to share. Try to deflate these conversations or exit before the other person starts getting angry. You do not want to generate any bitterness among your classmates, especially over something so stupid.

If you are a first year student, you should be looking for your internship as early as possible. If you are a second year student, you should be looking for a job as early as possible. Make use of all your available networking connections and look around online. Try looking at the specific employer's website rather than large job web sites. If the employer you want to work for does not have any open positions you can apply for, call and talk to a recruiter to see if there are any coming up or if you can make yourself a better job candidate.

Finally, one of the best things you can invest your time in as an MPA student is your writing skills. Much of your success in school and in your future work environment will revolve around your written communication skills. Use peer editing on your papers if possible and make use of your university's writing center if such a resource is available.
